![]() ![]() The Desolation of Smaug starts with Bree (a great, atmospheric scene, as it happens) and then its all new territory. The nostalgia trip wasn't as egregious as other films (The Force Awakens, Endgame), but it still got to be a little much. Its also more adventurous: An Unexpected Journey is dominated by familiar locations, familar characters, familiar artefacts, familiar music. ![]() That isn't to say the film is breathless (*paging The Rise of Skywalker*), it does linger in Mirkwood, in the Woodland Realm, and especially in Laketown, which serves as the "deep breathe before the plunge", so to speak. It takes a meager thirty minutes to get all the set-up out of the way, and then its setpiece after setpiece for the next two and a half hours. One reason is indeed that its the best paced. I love it: a solid ****1/2 out of ***** from me. The Desolation of Smaug is definitely the best of the three. It also has a good rating of 7.8 on IMDb. Then there is of course the meeting between Bilbo and Smaug which is excellently depicted.ĭesolation of Smaug is the highest rated movie critically, with a respectable 74% on RT. There is the conflict between Bard and Thorin, on whether going to the Mountain is a good idea. The last hour or so is the strongest part of the film, and arguably of the trilogy. Hence, it is better able to give a feel of adventure since the characters are constantly journeying from one place to another. Desolation of Smaug is free of this task and so moves at a better pace. However, there is still a lot to like in them.Īn Unexpected Journey kicks things in motion and has the responsibility to introduce the characters and the world. ![]() The Hobbit movies get a lot of criticism for being overly long and falling short of the impeccable standards set by the LOTR trilogy. ![]()
